This Month In Electronic Music (February)

Expanding on the previous format of our ‘Reviews…in Brief’, we have decided to give you guys a brief overview of what we’ve found interesting in the world of electronic music this month. So we’ll be covering releases, events, announcements and news. Check it out!

Commodo – F*ck Mountain / Good Grief (HOTLINE004)

Many in the bass music community would argue ‘F*ck Mountain’ is one of the best produced songs of the century, landing somewhere between grime and dubstep, in this fantastic middle ground. Its haunting build up explodes into some of the finest synth work we’ve seen since… well since ever really. Commodo’s production is on another planet; I love it. ‘Good Grief’, at a slower BPM, also shows a true dark and weighty character. Coming out on vinyl only on Hotline records on the 7th March.

Blackdot Birmingham Launch Party w/ Samu.l and tINI @ Next Door, Birmingham

Blackdot did their first weekly Friday party on the last day of February with established tech house artists Samu.l and tINI. Both are names I’ve heard thrown around a lot but have never got around to experiencing; this evening was fantastic from start to finish. Vibes, tunes and especially the brand new Birmingham venue ‘next[]door’ all added up to make a really good night. If you’re ever stuck for something to start your weekend with in the midlands, I’d highly recommend this night.

Portal brings Darius Syrossian their in two weeks time so if thats your vibe check it out:

Digid – Dub 2 Babylon (MSEP012)

MSEP012---Dub_2_Babylon_EP-artwork_zps15ed127f (1)

With strong support from numerous artists in the scene (particularly J:Kenzo), Digid has crafted this dubwise EP filled with reggae influence and premium vibe. Mindstep have certainly kept the lightness they project through this EP and although they’ve gone down a different avenue with this dubby release, it fits to the label so perfectly. ‘Rightous Soldier’ would have to be my personal favourite on the release, however it’s hard to tear apart any of the 7 tracks, as they’re all top drawer productions. I’m certain you’ll struggle to match this EP for the vibe and soothing structure. This is certainly one to be heard on a system.

Just Jack 8th Birthday @ Motion, Bristol

jsut jack

This month was started the right way with one of the biggest and best parties in the country celebrating eight years of flamboyant and over the top debauchery. Rarely does a group of promoters succeed to such a high degree in terms of both line up and vibe but these guys really know what they’re doing. This birthday was no different with a massive line up of house and techno across all four rooms of the Motion complex. Particular highlights were Roman Flugels brand of psychedelic and grooving house, Midland’s percussion intensive UK-oriented style and seeing Bez (of Happy Mondays fame) bopping around the event with a huge grin on his face.

Deafblind –Substitution (FA005)

Foundation Audio are making some really bold steps in the dubstep scene at the moment, most recently with this immense EP from Deafblind. The EP contains the trademark depth and darkness you expect to hear from the American, yet also has some more imaginative, lighter elements dotted throughout. It’s really refreshing to have three tracks that differ in styles, carrying weight as expected and it once again proves Deafblind’s developing style, showing more range to his skills.

News: Pinch announces Cold Recordings Compilation

After releasing three fantastic techno releases last year from Ipman, Batu and Elmono, Pinch has just announced a 12-track compilation release. This release will feature all of the label’s back catalogue released in digital format for the first time along with a number of new tracks. The most exciting part for me is the two Pinch tracks as I feel they will show a true representation of where he plans on taking the label in the future. You can find the album’s tracklist below:

Acre – Burning Memories
Ipman – Hellzapoppin’
Batu – Stairwells
Pinch – Down
Ipman – Ventricle
Elmono – Baton Rouge (Colder Mix)
Elmono – House Of Atreides
Acre – Trace Loops
Pinch – Search Party
Batu – Eraser
Acre – Northern Shadow
Elmono – Shadows On The Moon

Distance – Outer Limits EP (CHST030)

Distance has earned his place as a Godfather of dubstep and is one of the few original heads still regularly releasing tunes. ‘Broken Dawn’ and ‘Andromena’ are both heavily chord orientated epic pieces of music, taking the listener on a journey through sound. ‘Untouchable’ features some really ‘Night Vision’ style percussion and a really haunting back drop of vacant sounding notes. The final tune, ‘System Reset’ sees Distance taking a stab at 85bpm and creating a head nodding half step style tune. The whole EP is well worth your attention.
