Lately there have been numerous new labels sprouting between the cracks of the larger labels like Tempa and Deep Medi. These imprints are pushing extremely fresh sound and adding a complete new dynamic to the 140 sound and if there’s one label really making leaps and bounds, it’s Bacon Dubs. The Bacon family possibly get over-looked and occasionally don’t get the credit they deserve for the expert crafting of releases and the excellent selection of artists they have established under the label. This next EP, the 13th in their porky repertoire, is possibly one of the best to date and comes directly from the mind of Ohmtrix.
Unknown to some Ohmtrix, like many current dubstep producers began his electronic musical journey in the drum and bass realm; bashing together tracks, gaining experience and receiving advice from other artists to help tighten his productions. As his knowledge grew, he soon delved into the dubstep sound and from here on in, he’s been producing tracks reeking in energy and power, driven by his roaring sub-bass. Recently, having released a strong LP on SectionZ Records, he’s set his sights on continuing the run of form and I assure you, this EP hits every single spot.
‘No Tears’ kicks off the EP with a bang, instantly building atmosphere with a dwindling melody placed underneath a slicing effect. All progression is halted by the demonic voice sample as you’re flung into a vicious ruckus of bass. The sustained melody helps to add an extra dimension, giving it a lighter layer underneath. The contorting synths supplement the aggressive tone of the track, all-in-all making this the purest evidence of how immense Ohmtrix is at producing a tight beat.
The eponymous ‘Inside My Head’ builds anticipation during the intro through the building percussion and acutely placed enlightened chords. An elongated voice sample splits the track apart before the drop fiercely engages you via warping synths, a decapitating snare and rugged percussion – all backed by that heavyweight bass. This track enlists a wide variety of rhythmic elements which particularly give the 2nd drop an unmatched flow. Ohmtrix has used the vocal sample and chords as a harmony for the backdrop, tightly placing a tribalistic drum pattern over the top.
‘Mammoth’ amplifies Ohmtrix’s ease to bring different styles together and shows the depth of his musical knowledge. The track opens with a heart-beat bass line, captivating the ear drums with a swaggering techy-style vibe. Bass-laced synth work again is at the centre of the piece and unsurprisingly, the 2nd drop is somehow fabricated with a further sustainable groove. Originality and imagination seeps from the seams and although the track breathes so much flow, he has gifted it with an occasional stepping element through the clasping snare and kicking bass.
The EP finally and unfortunately draws to an end. However, you couldn’t have picked a better way to conclude such a masterpiece; with ‘Mammoth’ receiving the remix treatment from USA’s Mesck. The minimalistic atmosphere eludes all sense of light, as reverberating elements slowly come creeping in, until a power crazed drop is unleashed through a pummelling bass kick. The twisted synths Mesck has utilised during main body of the track is admirable, tightly forming alien bred sounds, layering them with unmatchable precision. Amidst the estranged SFX, you are hit back and forth by the complex percussion, with the sharp clatter of the snare birthing a true minimalistic stepper.
Personally, I believe this could be one of the best dubstep releases of the year, containing three destructive tracks from Ohmtrix, with Mesck’s remix adding an extra element of deepness to the EP. Alongside the fact that the artwork (made by Mesck) is perhaps the most detailed and creative I’ve seen for a long time. All-in-all, this release is a perfect package which everyone should have in their collection, ideal for an instant injection of energy during every mix. You’ll be able to acquire your copy of the release when it hits stores on Monday 2nd December. I’ll also be highly anticipating the next release coming from the Bacon Dubs gang, confirmed as an equally as large EP from head honcho, Sparxy, so keep your eyes open for that.
