Establishing themselves on the UK scene has been a jubilant success during the past two years for the duo from Vienna. With continued support from Bacon Dubs as their main platform for releases, they managed to birth two EP’s in quick succession. ‘We Are Monkeys EP’ was filled with all the ingredients for a perfect porky delight, fitting acutely to the sound the label had been pushing since their launch. They maintained their ancestral, tribal trademark style during their next release, ‘Alteration EP’, which came out in March this year – [PORK010] in the series. During the time, their production has adapted, being displayed with this next release, forthcoming on the recently formed Odea Records. DubApes have taken a much more techy edge with the 3 tracks on the plate, in addition to a deadly remix from none other than Widowmaker fortifying this brilliant release.
‘Gaia’ is the first track to feature on the release, being the second collaborated released track between DubApes and Kinetical, following ‘Alteration’ on their last EP. An atmospheric, animal infused soundscape is used as the backdrop for the initial part of the track, before it bursts into life courtesy of Kinetical’s mother-nature based bars and the funk driven sounds. The SFX and bouncing bass line are reminiscent of a vast number of house tracks, yet are riddled with that natural gritty DubApes style.
The second track ‘Still Water’ is the techy side of dubstep at its finest point; driving a spacey high pitched sound typical to techno in build up to the drop. Echoing robotic SFX intertwine with the repetitive vocals used in the intro and thumping bass line to deliver this divine and different approach to production from the pair of Austrians. There’s not a chance anyone couldn’t at least give a slight head bob to this one, as it oozes movement.
‘Gaia feat. Kinetical (Widowmakers ‘Mother Nature’ Remix)’ gives a different edge to the first track on the plate, imprinting his style firmly. It is slightly quicker in pace, but maintains the structural sounds used in the original, implanting a more technical percussion to the track. The build of tapping drums give this track a real ancestral vibe, placing you deep within a tropical rainforest.
‘Still Water (Acid Mix)’ takes it to yet another techy level with their Acid Mix, delivering an even more hectic version of the previous track. With the use of the resonating, high pitched, siren-like sound and the continuous repetition of the vocals, a sense of hypnosis surrounds the track. The structure of the track hardly changes, maintaining the pounding bass line throughout, to complete this rigorously moving EP.
This is a somewhat different release for this pair, with the addition of Widowmaker. It appeals to numerous genres, having used elements from Dubstep, Techno and House to supplement this incredible release. Odea Records are certainly a label to watch, with a lot of promise, so keep a close eye on their next release to follow on from this.
