Halfnaked is a fast growing party on the Bristol scene and they sure celebrated their first birthday in style! Top notch sets all around from guests and residents alike kept a busy club happy and the vibe, as always, was great.
It says a lot about the night when you look at their first night just over a year ago, which brought Disclosure and Pusherman to the Arc, and had people queuing outside desperate to get in. That really does speak wonders about the forward thinking nature and great eye for bookings shown by Halfnaked. Other previous guests include Paleman, Breach and Squarehead which shows the great variety of house, techno, garage and everything in between that they’re all about.
I arrived with the club getting busy, Goon Club All-Stars just getting started and everyone getting hyped to the best of grime, new and old. Close to every tune dropped by these guys was met with cheers and arms in the air.
Next up was Pusherman who laid down a brilliant set of house and techno which he started with a bit of a sing-a-long with Modjo – Lady (Hear Me Tonight) which as would be expected get an already psyched crowd even more into it . The highlight for me was Joy O’s BRTHDT as that “whum” bass gets me every time. His own production Shake It Off receiving the biggest reaction of his set much as it did at the first Halfnaked shows just how much love that fantastic release still gets.
Kry Wolf’s set somehow managed to exceed my expectations. Everything that I’ve heard from this duo of late has just been fantastic with releases on their own label Sound of Sumo, Food (the label they co-run with Shadow Child) and the prestigious Dirtybird shaking dancefloors across the world. Their sound has received support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, A-Trak and Roska and tonight exemplifies why.
Their huge track with Claude von Stroke, Turbosteppa, had the room going crazy and they didn’t let the hype drop for second throughout an hour of bass heavy house bangers. Can’t let the play of the crowd pleaser that is the Dimitri from Paris Re-Edit of the Prince classic I Wanna Be Your Lover go unmentioned as it brought to an end a fantastic set with the whole club clapping and boogieing along.
